Abstract

Compositions for removing radioactive contamination from the skin or hair or from inanimate surfaces contain (1) soap or a synthetic detergent, (2) one or more complexing or chelating agents capable of forming water-soluble complexes with radioactive cations and (3) a water-insoluble powder having a high zeta-potential of opposite sign to that of the ionic charge of the elements giving rise to the contamination. If a soap is used as component (1) it should be substantially free from alkali. Component (2) may be citric acid or a citrate, sodium ethylene-diamine tetracetate, sodium pyrophosphate, sodium hydrosulphite or phosphoric acid. Component (3) may be an inorganic substance, e.g. calcium carbonate, silica, titanium dioxide, barytes, felspar, montmorillonite, bentonite, fuller's earth, or ferric oxide, or an organic substance, e.g. cellulose. Examples are given of compositions containing (1) soap, ammonium citrate and barytes, (2) soap, citric acid, sodium ethylene-diamine tetracetate, felspar and fuller's earth, (3) soap, sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate, citric acid, ammonium citrate and wood flour, (4) soap, sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium ethylene-diamine tetracetate, tetrasodium, pyrophosphate and ferric oxide or silica, (5) sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate, sodium hydrosulphite and bentonite, and (6) sodium dodecylnaphthalene sulphonate, phosphoric acid, citric acid and barytes.
