Abstract

Polyacrylonitrile fibres are dyed or printed with a triphenyl-methane dyestuff which is free from sulphonic acid groups and which contains a secondary phenylamino group in at least one of the three phenyl nuclei in para-position to the central carbon atom, the dyestuff molecule containing as substituted amino groups only secondary phenylamino groups. The three phenyl nuclei or the external phenyl residues may contain other substituents such as alkyl, alkoxy or other amino groups or halogen atoms. The dyestuffs are applied as their salts with, for example, hydrochloric, sulphuric, phosphoric, amino - sulphonic, acetic, propionic, chloracetic, benzoic or salicylic acid. When the triphenyl - methane contains an acid salt-forming substituent such as carboxylic acid or sulphonic acid amide group, they may be employed in the form of their so-called inner salts. If desired the dyestuffs may be applied in the form of their carbinols and converted into salts on the fibre by the action of acids previously or subsequently applied. Sparingly soluble dyestuffs may be applied by the dispersion dyeing technique. Dyeing is preferably effected in a weakly acid bath at a raised temperature and, if desired, under pressure, and the dyeings may be subsequently steamed or subjected to a heat treatment. Numerous examples are given.
