Abstract

A copolymer of a conjugated diene and an ethylenic monomer containing the CH2=CH-group is epoxidized in the liquid phase with an aliphatic peracid containing from 1 to 10 carbon atoms. Specified copolymers are butadienestyrene, butadiene - acrylonitrile, isoprenestyrene, isoprene - isobutylene, isopreneacrylonitrile - styrene and cyclopentadienemethylstyrene-styrene and peracetic acid is the specified peracid. The reaction may take place in aqueous emulsion, in the presence of a solvent, e.g. benzene, toluene, xylene and chloroform or, if the copolymer is liquid, in the absence of solvent or water.
