Abstract

774,730. Latch fastenings. WILMOTBREEDEN, Ltd. Dec. 19, 1955 [Jan. 25,1955], No. 2170/55. Class 44. A vehicle door fastening comprises in combination a body part 10 adapted to be mounted at the free edge of the door, a rotary toothed catch 11 mounted on the body part for engagement with a striker on a fixed part of the vehicle body, a spring-loaded and pivotal pawl 27 on the body part for preventing rotation of the catch,. a press button 14 operable from the outside of the door, a key-operable barrel lock 15 incorporated in the press button, release means 35 for imparting a releasing movement to the pawl from the inside of the door, locking means 24 operable from the inside of the door, a slide 16 having a pin 18 and slot 17 connection with the body part and to which annular movement can be imparted by the press button, said slide being movable between a locked position, and an unlocked position by the key-operable barrel lock and by said locking means, a stud or other projection 19 on the slide for engaging the pawl and imparting a catch releasing movement thereto when angular movement is imparted to the slide in the unlocked position and a detent 31 movable by the pawl whereby a catch releasing movement of the pawl when the slide is in the locked position will move the slide to its unlocked position. As shown, the pawl is pivotally mounted on the pin 18 and a laterally extending portion 28 extends through a slot in the body part to engage a tooth of the catch 11. The pin 18 is also the pivot for a lever 12 which at its upper end has a lateral part 12a against which bears an extension 13 of the press button 14, the extension 13 being connected to the barrel lock 15. The slide 16 is connected to the lever 12 by means of the projection 19 which is mounted on the slide and which engages a slot 20 in the lever 12. Thus when the lever 12 is angularly moved the slide must move with it since the slide is also mounted on the pivot pin 18 of the lever. The slide can also move longitudinally of the lever 12 and when it is in its lowermost unlocked position as shown, the projection 19 engages a step or other abutment 29 on the pawl 27. Thus when the slide is in its lowermost position depression of the press button rotates the lever 12 and the projection 19 engages the abutment 29 and so rotates the pawl to release the catch 11. When the slide is in its uppermost locked position the projection 19 cannot engage the abutment 29 so that depression of the push button is ineffective to release the catch 11. The catch 11 can always be released from the inside of the door, irrespective of the position of the slide, since the release means 35 directly engages the pawl. When the pawl is rocked either by the outside press button 14, the inside release means 35, or by rotation of the catch 11 by closing the door, the consequent movement of the pawl 27 rocks the detent 31 by engagement of the pawl with a pin 30 on the detent and if the slide 16 is in the locked position the detent engages a shoulder or other abutment 33 on the slide and moves the slide to the unlocked position. The locking means 24 operable from the inside of the door is a lever which has a pin and slot connection with the slide for moving it to its locked position. The barrel lock can move the slide to the locked position by rotation from the outside of the door by means of a pin 26 on the extension 13 which engages a slot 25 in the slide; the slot enabling the barrel lock to return to its neutral position after actuating the slide. The slide is retained in either its locked or its unlocked position by means of a spring 21 which engages the pivot pin 18. In a modification the lever 12 is omitted and the slide is so constructed that in addition to being able to move vertically it can rotate about its pivot pin. The detent is also connected to the pawl by a link and engages the projection 19 on the slide instead of engaging a separate abutment. The construction operates in the same way as the previous construction.
