Abstract

774,396. Jet propelled helicopter rotors. RICHARDS, E. J. April 1, 1955 [April 23, 1954], No. 11789/54. Class 4. [Also in Groups XXVI and XXVII] A helicopter rotor blade is provided at or adjacent the trailing edge of the tip portion of the blade with an elongated narrow nozzle of fixed configuration in the form of a generally linear slot or other closed figure and means for emitting a propulsive jet from that nozzle. A rotor blade is formed with a spanwise duct 10 formed with chord wise branches 11 which terminate in nozzles 12 collectively arranged to emit a long narrow propulsive jet generated by the combustion of air from the duct 10 and fuel supplied to pipes 14 which inter-connect the nozzles. The nozzle outlets may be deflected downwardly to provide a lift component and the outlet edges of the nozzles may be corrugated to reduce noise. It is stated in the Provisional Specification that rods placed across the outlet of the nozzle assist in reducing noise. In other embodiments the nozzles have the form of circular or elliptical annular outlets from combustion chambers mounted at the tips of the rotor blades.
