Abstract
774,368. Electric cookers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 2, 1955 [Dec. 2, 1954], No. 34573/55. Class 39(3) In an 'electric cooking appliance of the type comprising a well 2 disposed in an aperture in the horizontal top wall 1 of the cooker with an electric heater 8 movable in the well from the bottom thereof to the level of the top 1, the well is a cylindrical shell movable between a lower position in which the upper end 3 of the well is at the level of and rests on the top 1 and an upper position in which the bottom of the well is adjacent the aperture, and latch means 14 pivoted on brackets 13 on the underside of the hob 1 have abutment surfaces 16, 17 projecting through vertical slots 20 in the well, so that upward movement of the well raises the heater 8 to its upper position, and the surfaces 16, 17 of the latch engage brackets 19 on the heater 8 to retain it in its upper position when the well is returned to its lower position. In order to return the heater 8 to its lower position, the well 2 is raised above its normal upper position, whereby the latch 14 is released from the heater which returns with the well when the latter is lowered. The sheathed heater 8 has a drip pan 11 with a flange 10 resting in the lower position on bosses 6 in the shell 2, which has an external flange 3 normally resting on the top 1. The pivoted latch arm 14 is biased by a spring 15 to the position shown in Fig. 2 and has projecting fingers 16, 17, 18 adapted to extend into the slot 20. The fingers 16, 17 abut against the bracket 19 on the heater as shown in Fig. 5 to retain the heater in its upper position. To lower the heater, the well is raised until the bosses 6 lift the heater 8 from the latch 14, which is then moved by the spring 15 to the position shown in Fig. 2, whereby the heater returns with the well when pushed down to the lower position. Total removal of the well 2 is prevented by the engagement of fingers 18 with the lower end 22 of the slot, and further upward movement of the latch 14 is prevented by a stop element 13a on the bracket 13.
