Abstract
774,031. Coating threads. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. March 3, 1955 [March 11, 1954], No. 6350/55. Class 140. [Also in Group IX] A process of coating a fibrous strand with resinous material comprises putting a strand composed of a plurality of closely adjacent glass fibres longitudinally through a mass of liquid resinous material and feeding the threads having excess material into and through a fixed die having an aperture of size which diminishes in the direction of movement of the fibres so as to remove excess material and exert a compressive force before the excess material is removed, whereby the material is forced at least partly between at least some of the fibres in the strand. The threads 22 are unwound from spools 20 on a creel and pass through guides 23, 24 before passing through wipers 41 having dies 42. The threads then pass to a fusing oven 27 and then over rollers 69 and between rollers 32 to separate winding spools 29 having a constant speed wind. The resin is pumped by motor 46 to a manifold 44 having a slot 45 extending forwardly and beneath the wiper 41. The wiper has an oblong blade 47 pivoted on a transverse shaft 50 the thread and resin pass through a slot in the blade and then the thread passes through a die 42. The die comprises a cup 56 with a centre 57 having an opening where the resin is compressed on the threads and an outlet which limits the thickness of coating the excess spilling on to a screen 38 through which it passes to a container 35 having an outlet which leads the resin through a filter 54 if necessary to the pump. Should a filament break while passing through the oven, the thread is secured to one of a series of slats 68 secured to an endless belt 67 traversing the oven. In an alternative coating apparatus shown in Fig. 12, a roller 79 rotates partly in the resin and feeds the resin to an inclined plate 80 leading to a wiper 85 and die 86. The thread passes over a guard 82 to the wiper and die. In a further embodiment the resin is fed from a hopper to a horizontal cylinder through which the thread passes, the inlet and outlet of the cylinder comprise converging members.
