Abstract

774,003. Microphones. ELECTRO-VOICE, Inc. Aug. 31, 1954 [Jan. 11, 1954], No. 25298/54. Class 40 (4). In a pressure gradient microphone having a chamber 19, Fig. 1, immediately adjacent one side of the diaphragm 12, the effective distance between the two sides of the diaphragm is made to vary inversely as the sound frequency by providing two indepenent passages 18, 23 from the exterior of the housing to the chamber which are of different length and admit primarily different portions of the frequency spectrum. Passages 18 and 23 deal with high and low frequencies respectively and the output is substantially constant at all frequencies. A chamber 26 provides a terminating impedance for the low-frequency passage. Casing 16, Fig. 10, has an enlarged upper portion 31 covered by a windscreen 35 which is held by a screw 34 in a three-legged spider 33 and the magnetic circuit 6 includes two or more permanent magnets 36. The high-frequency passage 17 is covered by a grill 37 and a microphone transformer 42 is included within the casing. The performance of the microphone is described with reference to vector diagrams, Figs. 3-9 (not shown), and an electrical analogue, Fig. 2 (not shown).
