773,793. De-icing helicopter rotor blades. LUCAS (INDUSTRIES), Ltd., J. July 22, 1955 [April 29, 1954], No. 12421/54. Class 4. A device for de-icing the blades of a helicopter rotor comprises a sheet metal combustion chamber a formed with a plurality of radially - extending flue pipes b, one for each blade, and an enclosing air jacket h which is surmounted by a cap j and provided with air inlets i and k, appropriate apertures g being provided in the top wall of chamber a. The device is mounted on a hollow rotor shaft e which carries a fuel line q and a high tension lead r to a stationary swirl-type fuel spraying nozzle d. Hot gases flow from chamber a along the flue pipes whence they are discharged into the outlets of the air jacket h, the resulting mixture of hot gases and air being conducted by pipes m extending along the interior of the leading edges of the blades o to outlets (not shown).
