Abstract

772,632. Metallurgical converters. KAISER CO., H. J. Dec. 20, 1954 [Dec. 28, 1953], No. 36826/54. Class 72 An apparatus to prevent the escape of gas from a converter or like metallurgicalfurnace wherein gases are generated comprises a duct for receiving the gases and a sealing device connecting the furnace opening to the duct which device is removable for loading and unloading the furnace. As shown ,applied to a converter, a converter 11 has a sealing plate 19 fitted to its mouth which is positioned below a duct 20 also fitted with a sealing plate 21 and in the space between the duct and the converter mouth a seal is provided. The seal comprises a sealing member 23 constructed in two equal parts, movable towards and away from each other on rails 45, and provided with sealing faces 27, 28 which co-operate with similar faces 22 and 18 on the sealing plates. A firebrick lining 26 on the inner periphery of the member and water cooling channels 32 are provided.
