Abstract

1374514 Annealing furnaces BETHLEHEM STEEL CORP 9 March 1972 [15 March 1971] 11173/72 Heading F4B An annealing furnace comprises an outer cover 11, a removable inner cover 12, a base assembly 13, an outer peripheral seal trough 14 and a supporting structure 15. The base assembly includes a bottom plate 21, a refractory tray 22 and a top plate 23, the plates 21, 23 respectively having peripheral flanges 24, 25 extending into the trough 14. The seal trough 14 comprises three channels (37, 38, 39, Fig. 2) and a closed steam jacket 40. The inner channel (37) and outer channel (39) are reservoirs for liquid metal seal material, e.g. Wood's metal, thereby sealing the protective atmosphere in heating chamber 16 from the atmosphere as well as sealing the refractory tray from the said protective atmosphere. In a further embodiment an additional liquid metal seal is provided adjacent the central fan shaft opening 28. The top plate 23 has a downwardly extending inner flange which extends into a reservoir of the liquid metal seal material.
