Abstract

771,671. Hoppers. NORTH THAMES GAS BOARD. Aug. 18, 1953 [Aug. 20, 1952], No. 20939/52. Class 78 (1). A hopper is provided with at least one member having a plurality of holes of a size to permit the passage therethrough of material being fed through the hopper by gravity and positioned for sliding contact with at least part of the internal inclined wall surface of the hopper and with means for imparting a reciprocatory and/or angular motion to the member. As shown, the hopper has a rectangular filling opening 10 with dependent side walls sloping to an outlet 19 closed by a sliding member 20. When the outlet is opened one or more apertured plates 21 are reciprocated or rotated angularly along one or more side walls to facilitate the flow to the outlet. Each plate is connected to a pair of rods 25 which extend through apertures 26 in the top-walls and are connected to eccentrics 27 mounted on a shaft 28 connected by lugs 30 to the top walls. Two plates sliding on opposing walls are operated synchronously but out of phase by a belt passing round pulleys 32 on the ends of the two shafts. A sprocket 36 on the shaft is connected by a chain 37 to a shaft driven by a motor 41 through suitable gearing. To drive the shaft, a clutch 38, 39 is operated when the outlet is opened by an electric plunger 42 which operates the clutch through linkage 43. The shafts may be operated by any other means. The plates are retained in position by guide members 44. The sliding members may be operated directly or indirectly by pneumatic or hydraulic pistons.
