Abstract

771,663. Road-vehicle spring-suspensions; vibration dampers. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Oct. 20, 1955 [Nov. 1, .1954], No. 29999/55. Classes 108(2) and 108(3). A vehicle suspension system comprises a steering knuckle support 16 pivotally connected between upper and lower transverse control arms 8 and 10 pivotally connected to the vehicle frame (not shown), a steering knuckle 18 pivotally connected to the support 16, and a dynamic absorber vibration damper 14 rigidly secured to the support 16. In the construction shown, the damper 14 comprises a cylinder 38 in which is slidable against the action of springs 54 and 56, a weight 36 having a central through bore 66. The latter is obturated by a metering plate 74 having a metering orifice 75. The plate 74 may be replaced by other plates having different sized orifices 75, to vary the characteristics of the damper. The cylinder 38 is filled with damping liquid through a removable cap 34. A bracket 78 welded to the upper part of the cylinder, 38 carries threaded pins 80, 80<SP>1</SP>, to which are screwed caps 82, 82<SP>1</SP>. The latter are slidable in apertures in the outer ends of the upper transverse control arms 8. The lower end-closure of the cylinder 38 is integral with the support 16, and with a portion 90 having a longitudinally split bore 92. A pin 94 is held in the bore 92 and has eccentrically disposed end portions 96 which are pivotally engaged with the outer ends of the lower transverse control arms 10. A coiled suspension spring (not shown) acts between the arms 10 and the lower surface of the frame member.
