Abstract

771,553. Microscopes. LINDNER GES., H. June 23, 1955 [June 29, 1954], No. 18233/55. Class 97(1) In a tool maker's microscope of the kind having the optical axis of the objective in line with the axis of a spindle on a machine tool and the optical axis of the ocular inclined thereto, illumination is provided by a light source from which the light rays reach the work (1) through the objective and (2) through an adjustable arrangement the optical axis of which intersects the optical axis of the objective in the edge or line of the work piece to be sighted. As shown in Fig. 1, the microscope has a casing 6 with a stepped conical shaft portion 25 which may be inserted into the bore of a spindle of a machine tool. The optical axis of the objective 1, mounted in the casing 6, is in line with the axis of the shaft portion 25, whereas the optical axis 2<SP>1</SP> of the ocular 3 mounted in a tubular extension 5 of the casing 6, is at an, angle thereto. Light from the work piece 14 passing through the objective reaches the ocular after reflection in a prism 21. A lamp 4 is housed in a chamber 7 in the microscope casing 6, and is surrounded by a cylinder 10 rotatable within the chamber 7. Light from the lamp 4 passes out through an aperture 10" in the cylinder 10 through lenses 18 to an optical flat 19 mounted at an angle of 45 degrees to the optical axis 2 of the objective 1. After reflection at the optical flat 19, the light passes through the objective to the work piece 14. The cylinder 10 has a tubular portion 8 projecting through an aperture 10<SP>111</SP> in the casing, the aperture 10<SP>111</SP> being sufficiently large for the tubular portion 8 to be adjusted so that the optical axis 12 of a lens system 11 mounted therein may intersect the optical axis 2 of the objective at the edge 13 of the work piece 14. By this means if the edge 13 of the work piece 14 is chamfered or bevelled, the bounding lines of the chamfered or bevelled area can be clearly seen and may be aligned with the graticule on a plate 24 which is viewed in the ocular 3. If desired, the tubular portion 8 may be moved into its dotted-line position so that the optical axis 12 is parallel to the optical 'axis 2 of the objective 1. In this case, the work piece is illuminated only by light emerging from the objective 1.
