[Also in Group XXXIV] The brake drums on a motor vehicle are cooled by air driven through tubes 37, 38, 39 and 40 to individual wheels by means of fans 26 automatically brought into operation when the brakes are applied in the normal manner by simultaneous operation of a Bowden cable mechanism 49, 50 which by pulling inwardly wedge members 47 and 48 acts through pulleys 34 to cause relative axial movement of shafts 30 ned 31 in tubes 22 and 23 so that an annular ammber 12 rotating with the vehicle shaft 6 is gripped between pulleys 35 and 36 and the fans are thus rotated to drive air to the brakes. In a modification, the fans are mounted on a shaft disposed transversely of the vehicle and driven from the torque shaft through an endless screw and suitable clutch.
