Gill bars in a gill-box or like machine are guided during their movements between working and return planes by pivoted guides, the pivots being provided with a rubber bush or sleeve which acts as a torsion element. In one embodiment, guides 7, 7a are pivoted at 8, by means of rings 8a, 8c with rubber masses 13 pressed between the rings. In another form, Fig. 3, a rubber sleeve or bush 13a is pressed between two metal tubes 18a, 18c, the inner tube 18a being held rigidly by a bolt 18 and the tube 18c having a ring 11 fixed to it. When the gill guide 17a is turned by a gill bar, an adjusting screw 17d in a lug 17c presses upon an arm 11b of the ring 11 to turn it against the forces exerted by the rubber sleeve 13a. The forces exerted by the sleeve 13a may be adjusted by the screw 17d. A limiting stop is provided by an arm 12a of an adjustable ring 12. The gill guide 17a may be so shaped as to cause descending gill bars to turn slightly and to provide means for reducing wear on the edges of the bars. Loading of the drafting rollers may be by adjustable hydraulic or other pressure arrangements. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 693,252.
