[Also in Group XL (b)] A stop motion for use in conjunction with textile machines comprises a source of light L, a light beam adapted to be influenced by breakage, lapping or displacement of a sliver or yarn passing through the machine, and a photo-electric cell P upon which the light beam is directed, the cell P being connected to the striker of a gas filled cold cathode discharge tube G which is' normally non-conductive. Due to the interruption of the light ray, the tube G discharges with the result that the current in a relay A falls below its release point so that it releases and opens its contact A1, thus disconnecting current from a winding T1 so that an alarm circuit is interrupted and the main circuit breaker is operated to stop the machine. In an alternative embodiment two light beams are directed on to the photocell and such beams are normally obstructed by vanes, one of which moves out of the beam, on the occurrence of a fault, thus allowing the photo cell to become conductive.
