In a surgical needle formed at its rear end with an axial hole A which merges into a lateral opening A', and also with a diametral hole C extending right through the needle, so that a suture may be passed through the hole A to emerge at the opening A<SP>1</SP> and may then be passed through the hole C, a tapering axial slit F. extends rearwards from the diametral hole, so that when a pull is exerted on the suture, after it has passed through said holes, it will be forced into the slit and gripped thereby. The surfaces of the slit may be roughened. As shown, a longitudinal groove B, of sufficient depth and width to accommodate the suture, extends between the opening A<SP>1</SP> and the hole C. A transverse notch G is provided near the forward end of opening A' to facilitate severing the suture. A tapering axial slit D extends forwardly from hole C, and a further longitudinal groove I is provided opposite groove B.
