Description

Oct. 20, 1936.
3 m P [Murphy Patented Oct. 20, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FILE Pierce J. Murphy, Tecumseh, Nebr.
Application February 12, 1935, Serial No. 6,228
1 Claim. (01. 29-80) My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:-
Figure 1 is a face view of a file having a handle constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, Ill designates the bodyof the file, which may be of any suitable character, as for instance, flat bastards, mill bastards, square files, rat tail files, wood rasps, etc.
The shank l l is fiat and integral with the body of the file and is of the same thickness as the body of the file. This shank is extended laterally and rearwardly, as shown in Figure 1, and is disposed in the same plane as the toothed por tion or body of the file. Welded to the extremity of the shank II is a looped portion l2, which is returned upon itself and welded at its forward end at l3 to the body of the file. This portion I! has a thickness approximately the same as the shank and the body of the file. The shank II and the section I2, together form a handle loop, and this handle loop, lying as it does in the same plane as the body of the file and having a thickness approximately the same as the body 5 of the file, does not interfere in any way with the free movement of the file when the file is used.
My invention provides everyfile with a handle so that it will save the necessity of using. wood handles or the patented detachable handles, and when the file is not in use, it can be hung up on a nail.
By having an integral handle on the file it will eliminate the possibility of the handle breaking while filing is being done, with the likelihood of the shank of the file piercing the operators hand.
I' claim:
A file having a fiat toothed body and a flat integral shank extending laterally and rearwardly from the butt end of the file, the shank having a thickness approximately equal to that of the file and being disposed in the same plane as the toothed portion of the file, and a section welded to one end of the extremity of the shank and at its other end being welded to the body of the file, the shank and welded section together forming a handle loop, the welded portion having a thickness approximately the same as the shank and.- body of the file.
