A brassiere comprises cup sections with front portions and side bands joined to or integral with their lower and outer edges, the lower edges of the front portions diverging downwardly and the side bands having upper and lower edges converging towards their outer ends, so that a horizontal line through the lower edges of the cup sections divides each side of the brassiere into two substantially triangular portions, one above and the other below the horizontal centre line. In Fig. 3 the cup section 14, front portion 16 and side band 21 are formed in one piece of non-elastic fabric, whereas Fig. 5 shows the front portion and side band made in a single panel 40 of elastic fabric having principal stretch in the direction perpendicular to the edge 41. In an alternative form (Fig. 7, not shown) the side band is stretchable in the lengthwise direction. In a further modification, Fig. 8, the centre portion 69 consists of a single piece of non- elastic fabric having its side edges joined to elastic front portions 79, 80, which are in turn stitched to non-elastic panels 85, 86. The brassiere may have shoulder straps, as at 50, 51, in Fig. 5, and stiffening elements 19, Fig. 3, and 87-91, Fig. 8, may also be provided.
