764,793. Engine assisted cycles. SOC. D'APPAREILS DE CONTROLE ET D, EQUIPMENT DES MOTEURS S.A.C.E.M. March 4, 1955 [March 6, 1954], No. 6496/55. Classes 79(2) and 79(3). [Also in Group XXIV] An engine assisted cycle is driyen by a roller 1 engaging the tyre of a wheel 2 and is characterized in that the transmission between a shaft 15 of the engine 3 and a shaft 8 of the roller 1 comprises a belt 5 running over an expanding driving pulley 6 of variable effective diameter and a driven pulley 7 mounted on a movable arm 9, the arm 9 being so mounted that driving load tends to move the pulleys 6 and 7 apart against the action of a spring 17 in pulley 6 so as to automatically adjust the transmission ratio. In the embodiment the engine 3 is mounted on the front fork of a bicycle to which the arm 9 is also attached by means of an intervening pivoted link 11 which is pressed downwards by means of a spring 20. The pivot between arm 9 and link 11 is set skew so that as the roller 1 is displaced to the right it is also displaced outwards away from the wheel to compensate for the outwards displacement of the belt 5 as it moves to a smaller diameter of the pulley 6. Alternatively the belt may be kept parallel to the wheel 2 by making both pulleys of variable diameter. The driving pulley 6 has one frusto-conical portion 14 fixed to the shaft 15, the other portion 16 being pressed inwardly along driving fingers 19 by a spring 17.
