Abstract

A process for manufacturing heat treated low alloy steels having low carbon and which resist high stresses in a corrosive atmosphere comprises subjecting a steel containing 0.08-0.2 per cent C., 0.3-1.2 per cent Mn, 0.6-5.0 per cent Gr, 0.15-0.6 per cent Al and optionally 0.1-1.0 per cent Mo, the balance being iron and impurities to a heating to form austenite and cooling at a rate at least equal to cooling in still air and tempering at 500-700 DEG C. The steel may also contain 0.1-0.8 per cent Si and up to 0.5 per cent of one or more of V, Ni, and Ti. The austenizing treatment may comprise heating to 950 DEG C. and cooling in still air, or quenching in oil or water from 925 DEG C. The steel may also be subjected to an isothermal transformation from the austenizing temperature at 500-700 DEG C. The austenizing heating or the tempering heating maybe performed in a slightly oxidizing atmosphere to produce surface decarburization. The steel is stated to be of value in oil wells or refineries where it may be subjected to high stresses in an atmosphere having a high content of sulphuretted hydrogen.
