Abstract

762,629. Detecting leaks in pipes. SCANTLEBURY, W. R. Dec. 2, 1954 [July 13, 1954], No. 20462/54. Class 99(2) A device for detecting leaks in a pipe comprises two inflatable containers which are adapted to be inserted into the pipe in spaced relationship and each of which is inflatable to a size such that obturation of the pipe can be effected substantially solely by the inflated container, means for inflating the containers so that they press against the walls of the pipe and seal off a testing space from the remainder .of the pipe, means for introducing a gas under pressure into the test space and means for detecting a change in the pressure in the test space. As shown, a test space 9 is sealed off by means of inflatable bags 1, 2 of rubber and canvas or like flexible and resilient material. A flexible tube 11 extends to an air compressor (not shown) whereby both bags may be inflated simultaneously. A flexible tube 17 leads to the air compressor and compressed air is supplied to the space 9 through the tube 4. The bags are connected together by means of a connecting rod or tube 8. A succession of joined rods 13 may be used to draw the bags 1, 2 through the pipe. An eye may be provided at the trailing end of the tube 5 so that the bags may be pulled back through the pipe if required. Alternatively the bags may be pushed through the pipe by a succession of joined rods. The flexible tube which supplies the test space is closed by a shut off valve and the test pressure is watched by an appropriately placed gauge. Known values are provided for the selective supply of the inflating and test pressures and the relief thereof. The tube 5 may be replaced by a rod or both the tubes 4, 5 may be solid the tube 17 leading through one of the bags.
