Abstract

1,199,919. Detecting leaks in pipes. CARVER & CO. (ENGS.) Ltd. Sept. 19, 1967 [Sept. 23, 1966], No. 42623/66. Heading G1S. Apparatus for testing pipes for leakage comprises two sealing members 1, 2 each consisting of a tube 6 to the end flanges 7 of which a sleeve 8 of rubber or plastics material is secured by clamping rings 9. Bearing discs 13, 17, 18 are screwed on to the ends of a supporting tube 10 and a supporting tube or rod 12, the latter having a brush 20 and a ring 19 secured to its leading end. Chains 16 entered between the discs 13 and a fluid supply line is linked to chains 29. The fluid supply line feeds compressed air to a tube 22 connected to the sealing members 1, 2 by tubes 21 and to a tube 23. A cable is connected to the ring 19 and the apparatus is hauled into an underground pipe, for example, compressed air then being fed to the members 1, 2 which expand to seal off the space between them. This space is then supplied with compressed air through the tube 23 and a pressure gauge in the supply line to the tube 23 is observed to see if any leakage occurs. On releasing the pressure, the apparatus is hauled to the next point along the pipe and the test repeated.
