Abstract

761,880. Electric indicating systems. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Nov. 5, 1954 [Nov. 25, 1953], No. 32700/53. Class 40 (1). In a device for recording the density of a liquid using a hydrometer, movements of which are sensed by a ferromagnetic wire carried thereby and a coacting coil system connected through a bridge circuit to the recorder, linearity of the recorder response relative to liquid density changes is achieved by appropriate dimensioning of the wire and the circuit components. As shown, a glass hydrometer 12, Fig. 4, floats in the liquid whose density is to be measured, in a constant level chamber 14. The hydrometer stem carries an iron wire enclosed in a corrosion resistant sheath 13 disposed within a transmitter coil system 15, and a resistance thermometer 16 used for temperature compensation is disposed in a sheath in the liquid inlet to the chamber 14. Circuitry, Fig. 2. The coil system 15 comprises an A.C. energized primary coil 2 mounted on or inside a pair of similar secondary coils R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> connected in series aiding in a bridge circuit R<SP>1</SP>-R<SP>8</SP> the component values of which are chosen as disclosed in the Specification to achieve linearity of the recorder response. The galvanometer 3 of the self-balancing recorder is connected across the bridge output in series with a temperature compensating voltage applied at 4, 5. The bridge is balanced by automatic adjustment of R<SP>6</SP>, and R<SP>4</SP> is adjustable for zeroizing the recorder. The rectifiers 7, 8 permit use of a D.C. recorder but may be dispensed with, Fig. 1 (not shown), for A.C. operation. Temperature compensation, Fig. 3. The compensating voltage at 4, 5 is derived from a bridge one arm of which includes the winding 9 of the resistance thermometer 16, Fig. 4. The bridge is fed from the same A.C. source 10- 11 which feeds the coil 2, Fig. 2, through a potentiometer R<SP>9</SP> ganged with the bridge balancing resistor R<SP>6</SP>, Fig. 2.
