761,427. Cooling cylinders and fuel injection nozzles. PORSCHE, F. Dec. 1, 1954 [Feb. 23, I954], No. 34808/54. Classes 7 (2) and 7 (3). In an air-cooled engine wherein the cooling air guided by a sheet-metal jacket 14 around the cylinder 1 and cylinder head 3 is impelled over the cylinder and head cooling ribs by the ejector action of the exhaust gases, the jacket 14 being open on the side R of the incoming cooling air thereby directly exposing an injection nozzle or sparking plug 11 on the non- jacketed part of the cylinder head to the cooling air, the ejector nozzle 13 is disposed on that side of the cylinder opposite to the injection nozzle or sparking plug 11 so that the cooling air flows through the jacket 14 without any substantial change in direction. The cylinder 1 is provided with horizontal cooling ribs whilst the cylinder head, which has a horizontal and two vertical series of cooling ribs is provided with a sleeve 8 and a hood 9 that enclose the overhead valve operating mechanism, not shown. On the opposite side of the head 3 and integral therewith is the exhaust conduit 12 which opens into the integral ejector nozzle 13 located in a tube 17 that is part of the jacket 14, the jacket being open on the side facing the direction R of cooling air, the head opening 15 is shown as being wider than and merging into the cylinder opening 15'. During engine operation the exhaust gases emerging from the ejector 13 suck the cooling air through the openings 15 and 15' and the engine cooling ribs, the admixed air and exhaust gases passing from the tube 17 into a diffuser, not shown.
