In an electric are chain-welding machine two jaws 1, 2 are applied to each abutting chain link end, the jaw 1 being of material of high electrical conductivity, e.g. electrolytic copper and forming an electrode and the jaw 2 being of strong material, e.g. steel and forming a clamping jaw for upsetting. Each jaw may be separately controlled and the pressure applied to the electrode may be less than that applied to the clamping jaw.
