760,298. Making piston rings. BANQUAREL, A. L., and METALES Y PLATERIA RIBERA SOC. ANON. Oct. 27, 1954 [Nov. 4, 1953], No. 31045/54. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXVI] A method of making a composite piston ring having a body of cast-iron and a sliding surface of anti-friction metal comprises the following steps: making a ring of cast-iron in a mould, machining the outer surface of the ring, applying to the ring a coating of anti-friction metal, heat-treating the composite ring so formed in a furnace with a controlled temperature and atmosphere, and machining the composite ring to the desired size. The anti-friction metal, which may be bronze, copper, or leadcopper alloy, may be applied by spraying or by a powder metallurgical method. For ensuring the adhesion of the two metals there may be provided on the periphery of the cast-iron ring dovetail grooves which are filled with the anti-friction coating metal. The machining operations comprise grinding the sliding surface and slotting the ring. A number of castiron rings may be stacked into a cylindrical pile for the coating process. The inside of the cast-iron ring may also be coated with antifriction metal.
