Abstract

571,139. Making porous metal bodies. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Jan. 26, 1944, No. 1447. Convention date, July 10, 1943. Addition to 554,110. [Class 82 (i)] The method and apparatus described in the parent Specification is adapted to the production of composite articles such as bushes which are required to have a reinforcing backing. The backing-shell 60, of steel, nickel, nickel alloy, copper or copper-plated steel is mounted in the two-part mould 34, 30 of the parent Specification and powdered metal is introduced and packed centrifugally and is strickled level with the mould flanges. A controlled atmosphere is supplied to the interior of the bushing by a perforated pipe and the powder is induction heated and sintered whilst rotating. The porous layer may be impregnated with lead by flowing onto the surface whilst rotating. The bushings may be sized in known manner by the passage of a burnishing punch.
