760,223. Flexible laminated materials. ALLSOPP, H. S. Sept. 29, 1953 [Sept. 29, 1952], No. 24313/52. Class 140. A laminated material, suitable for use as a floor-covering, consisting of rectangular blocks 2, Fig. 2, of hard-wearing material laid in pairs forming souares and adhered to a flexible backing or base 1 with the blocks of each pair extending at right angles to those of adjoining pairs, is made by feeding a length of the flexible backing over a support 4, Fig. 4, applying an adhesive by a device 8 to the backing, assembling the blocks 2 on the adhesive-coated backing, applying pressure to the assembly, e.g. by a pair of spring-pressed rollers 10, 11, keeping the product rigid until dry, e.g. under a weight 12, squaring the edges by means of a straight line edger, and rendering it uniform in thickness with the aid of a " thicknesser " or belt sander. The hard-wearing material may be wood or a plastic material. The adhesive may be applied in two stages as in the case of urea-formaldehyde resin where a second coating of a setting agent may be applied. The backing may be similar to the material used as underfelt for carpets, and may be water- and rot-proof.
