Abstract

Polyalkylene terephthalates are made by heating a substance of formula: <FORM:0760125/IV(a)/1> where n is 2-10, R and R1 are alkyl or aryl radicals and Ar is a para-substituted benzene ring. Preferably the by-products, i.e. glycol di-esters, are removed from the reaction zone by distillation. Polyesterification catalysts (many specified) may be used. In examples, polyethylene terephthalate was made by heating (1) the dibenzoyl ester of bis-(hydroxyethyl)-terephthalate at 305 DEG C.for 5 hours at 0.1 mm. of Hg pressure; (2) the diacetyl ester of bis-(beta-hydroxyethyl)-terephthalate at 305 DEG C. for 5.5 hours at 20-40 mm. of Hg. pressure and in presence of antimony oxide.ALSO:An ester of terephthalic acid of formula <FORM:0760125/IV(b)/1> where n is 2-10, R and R1 are alkyl or aryl radicals and Ar is a para-substituted benzene ring, is made by reacting a bis-(beta-hydroxyalkyl) terephthalate with an acid chloride (e.g. benzoyl or acetyl chloride).
