Abstract

1,132,513. Polycarboxylic esters. CONTINENTAL OIL CO. 14 Jan., 1966, No. 1959/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Divisions B2 and C3] The invention comprises esters of polycarboxylic acids having the formula in which P is an aliphatic hydrocarbon nucleus of at least three carbon atoms, a benzene hydrocarbon nucleus, a naphthalene hydrocarbon nucleus or a styrene-maleic anhydride polymer nucleus having two styrene-maleic anhydride groups; R 1 is alkyl, alkoxyalkyl or aralkyl; R 2 is a radical of formula in which R is hydrogen, alkyl, aralkyl, aryl or cycloalkyl, n is 2-4; x is 0-3 and y is 1-5; R 3 is the same as R 1 or R 2 ; and m is 1-4. The esters may be prepared by adding to 1 mole of the polycarboxylic acid or to its anhydride from 1 to 5 moles of the aryloxyalkanol or aryloxyalkoxy alkanol and heating to form a partial ester in the absence of a catalyst; the other esterifying alcohol or alcohols are then added to the mixture along with an esterification catalyst, e.g. sulphuric acid or p-toluene sulphonic acid, and the reaction is completed. Many examples are given of the starting materials and of the ester products and detailed examples are given of the preparation of (a) diphenoxyethoxyethyl mono-isodecyl trimellitate; (b) di-phenoxypropyl di-2-ethylhexyl pyromellitate; (c) di-butylphenoxybutyl isooctyl tricarballylate; and (d) tri-amylphenoxyethyl tri-hexyl mellitate. C 1-2 alkyl radicals, R<SP>3</SP> is a hydrogen atom or a C 1-2 alkyl radical and A is an ethylene or propylene radical, and pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof, are prepared by reacting a compound of Formula II, wherein M is a hydrogen or alkali metal atom, with a compound of formula X.A.NR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>, wherein X is a chlorine or bromine atom, followed, if desired, by salification. 5,6 - Dihydro - 5 - methyl - 11 - oximino - 6- oxomorphanthridine is prepared by reacting 5,6- dihydro - 6,11 - dioxomorphanthridine with methyl iodide to form 5,6-dihydro-5-methyl-6,11- dioxo-morphanthridine and reacting this with hydroxylamine hydrochloride. Pharmaceutical compositions having antidepressive activity, for oral or parenteral administration, comprise a compound of Formula I together with a pharmaceutically acceptable diluent or carrier. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,086,338.
