Abstract

759,654. Cupping. U.S. INDUSTRIES, Inc. July 27, 1954, No. 21874/54. Class 83 (4). A metal drawing press comprising a frame, a plurality of guide-rods mounted for reciproca. tion within said frame, a slide fixedly mounted directly to said guide-rods for movement there. with, a plurality of stationary guide or bearing members surrounding each of said guide-rods above and below said slide to guide the recipro. cating movement of said slide, and means for reciprocating said guide-rods and slide is characterized by interengaging means between said rods and slide for adjusting the slide with respect to said rods. In a single action press opposed uprights 1 and 2 are connected by a cross-member 3 and a lower fixed die is supported on a bed 4. A cross-head 5 is mounted upon guide-rods 6 and 7 which also carry a slide 10 adjustable thereon by rotating a bevel gear member 16 in screw-thread engagement with the rods. The rods reciprocate in bearings in the machine frame above and below the slide. An eccentric strap 27 attached to the crosshead 5 reciprocates the slide, crosshead and rods and is mounted on a shaft 31 driven by a motor 41. Counter-balancing means 43 positioned on the member 3 comprise a cylinder 44 and piston 45 connected to the slide. In a double-acting press uprights 48 are connected by a cross-beam 49. An outer slide 50 is mounted on an upper crosshead 51 by means of threaded rods 52 secured to the crosshead which is adjustably mounted on guide-rods 55 for reciprocation therewith, the adjustment being effected by worm gear members 56 driven from a common shaft 60. The guide-rods which are carried in bearings 62, 63 and 64 are mounted on a crosshead 65 reciprocated by drive means. Counterbalancing means are provided on the outer slide. An inner slide 69 is adjustably mounted for independent reciprocation within the outer slide on an upper crosshead 70 carried by guiderods 75 guided in bearings 79, 80 and 81. The inner slide is counterbalanced and the guide-rods 75 are attached to a lower crosshead 85 which is reciprocated by drive means in timed relation with the crosshead 65 of the outer slide. The drive means includes shafts 86 at each side of the machine carrying eccentrics 87 connected to a crosshead 88. Links 89 and 90 connect the cross-head 88 with uprights 91 on the lower crosshead 65 for the outer slide. A power source 92 drives a chain of gears to rotate each shaft 86 to reciprocate the crossheads 88 and 65. Other eccentrics 94 on the shafts 86 are connected to the crosshead 85 of the inner slide. In a triple action press outer and inner clamp slides are arranged above the bed as in the doubleaction press but in addition a third action slide is reciprocably mounted below the bed for performing a second draw. Uprights 97 are connected at their upper ends by a cross-beam 98. The outer slide 99 is adjustably mounted on an upper crosshead 100 which is adjustably mounted on guide-rods 104 as hitherto. The guide-rods reciprocate in bearings 109, 110 and in the bed 111 and are mounted on a crosshead 112 reciprocated by drive means. The inner slide 116 is adjustably mounted on a crosshead 117 as hitherto and the crosshead is adjustably mounted on guide-rods 122 which reciprocate in bearings 126, 127 and 128. The guide-rods are mounted on a crosshead 129 reciprocable by drive means. The third slide 130 is mounted below the bed upon a plurality of arms 131 eccentrically mounted on crank portions 132 of a drive-shaft 133 which is driven from a power shaft 136 in timed relation with the movements of the other slides so that the third slide 130 is reciprocated to perform a drawing operation during the dwell period of the upper slide 116. Drive means as disclosed in Specification 712,731 reciprocate the outer slide crosshead 138 and linkage connected to the crosshead and a rock-shaft 144 causes reciprocation of the crosshead 112. The inner slide is reciprocated by eccentrics 146 on a shaft 150 connected to the inner slide crosshead 129.
