Abstract

587,630. Cupping. TRIGGS, W. W. (Bliss Co., E. W.). Oct. 13, 1944, No. 19809. [Class 83 (iv)] A press for drawing sheet metal in which a main crank-shaft driven by a gear train is adapted to drive a die slide and in which toggle mechanism is provided for operating a work-clamping slide and in which the axis of the crank-shaft and toggle mechanisms extend from back to front of the machine, is characterised in that the toggle mechanism includes two rocker shafts on which members of the gear train are rotatably supported and the crank-shaft is connected to the rocker shafts to impart a rocking motion thereto to actuate the toggle mechanism. The press frame comprises a base, uprights 7 and a crown 8, clamped together by vertical tie rods and a removable cover 9. The crown provides bearings for the main crankshaft and for the two rocker shafts, all of which extend from back to front of the press. A motor 13 drives a pulley 14 which may be coupled through a clutch to a shaft carrying a brake and a pinion 23 which drives through a gear 24 a sleeve 25 supported on one of the rocker shafts 29. The other end of sleeve 25 carries a gear 26 meshing with a gear 33 mounted on a sleeve on the second rocker shaft 34, this sleeve carrying gears 36, 37 which mesh with gears 38, 39 on the main crank-shaft 40 having a crank-pin 45 connected to the die slide 54. The stroke of this slide is adjustable by means of a screw-threaded member 52 which may be rotated through a worm 50b to vary the effective length of the slide. At both the back and front of the press outside the main bearings, the crank-shaft 40 carries a subsidiary crank 53 connected by a member 59 with a slide member 60 coupled by links 62 to toggle levers 31, 35 mounted on the outer ends of rocker shafts 29, 34 respectively, the other ends of these levers being connected by rods 65, 66 to the work-clamping slide 10. The effective length of this slide is adjustable by means of screws 69 and lock-nuts 73, 74. The upper part of the die-slide 54 is formed as a trough 55 adapted to receive lubricant dripping from the gears 38, 39.
