Abstract

759,502. Change-speed gearing. SELF-CHANGING GEARS, Ltd. Aug. 31, 1954 [Sept. 3, 1953], No. 24365/53. Class 80(2) In epicyclic changespeed gearing wherein brake bands 8 are selectively applied to gear annuli 7 by fluid-pressureoperated pistons, each cylinder 9 is detachably mounted by a flange 10 and bolts 12 in an aperture in the top of the gear casing 1 on the side thereof remote from the brake anchorage means, and the piston 14 seats on the rounded end 17 of a rod 18 pivoted at its other end to one end of a lever 20 pivoted on a bracket 22 secured to the detachable base plate 2 of the casing, whereby the cylinder and piston may be removed without disturbing any of the other mechanism in the casing. The other end of lever 20 carries a roller 23 engaging a cam surface 24 on a lever 25 operating on the upper end 31 of the band B through the hooked end of a strut 28 pivoted at its lower end on the base plate 2, and operating on the lower end 32 of the band through a pivoted rod 32a carrying a fulcrum 33 engaging the lever 25. Each cylinder 9 has a linear 9a secured by a pin 9b, and has an aperture 9c for the entry of oil mist from the interior of the casing 1. The several cylinders may be cast en bloc.
