Abstract

231,104. Toomey, J. A. Nov. 3, 1924. Controlling different functions by same lever; pneumatic transmission.-Variable-speed gearing comprises a number of separate countershafts each carrying a friction clutch such as P<1>, Fig. 6, which is operated through a movable shaft section such as N from a fluid-actuated piston 39, which is selected by a distributing valve 26, Figs. 1 and 15. A control lever 73 is moved from side to side in a slotted member 74 to operate the valve 26 and so control the speed gear, and is moved up and down to carry the member 74 with it, and so operate a valve 22, which controls the brake cylinder 53, Fig. 2, of the vehicle. The speed gear is contained in a casing 20 upon an end of which pneumatic cylinders 38 are arranged in a circle. When a piston 39, Fig. 6, is actuated, a shaft section N moves to the right, engaging a gear clutch P'. The valve 26 directs compressed air, which comes through the main valve 22 from a tank 21. to one of a number of pipes 28 leading to the gear cylinders 38.
