759,180. Auxiliary boiler heaters for domestic fireplaces. EASTERN GAS BOARD, and BROOKES, J. T. Dec. 2, 1954 [Dec. 2, 1953], No. 33519/53. Class 126. A grate for independently or simultaneously using gas or solid fuel has a grate, a gas burner in a separate compartment below and at the rear of the solid fuel grate and spaced from it by a firebrick, and a boiler adjacent the fireback, and cranked midway of its vertical sides so that its lower half provides a passageway for the combustion products from the gas burner. An open fireplace with a back boiler 10 and an auxiliary gas fire 5 housed in the front fret 6 is provided with a gas burner 15, in a separate compartment, to heat the boiler. An automatically lighting burner 7 at the front of the grate 1 ignites a burner 8 at the back which serves to ignite solid fuel on the grate 1. A backwardly directed jet on the burner 8 enables the boiler burner 15 to be lit automatically. Ducts at the sides of the grate lead air to the boiler burner compartment, and the front wall of the boiler has fins 25. Above the fire back 2 the boiler is cranked and a front plate 24 forms a flue which is controlled by a damper 28 so that combustion products from the open fire may pass more or less over the boiler face.
