Abstract

758,668. Lenses. RUSSELL, F. M. Oct. 20, 1954 [Nov. 6, 1953], No. 30744/53. Class 97 (1). A lens comprises a pair of superimposed discs 1, 2 at least one of which is of flexible transparent material, the margins of 'the internal faces of the discs being sealed to a ring 3 of compressible material to enclose a fluid in the space 9 therebetween and being carried by a mount having means for adjusting the pressure applied to the outer margin of one or each disc whereby the volume distribution of the fluid is varied to adjust, the curvature of one or both discs. As shown, the mount comprises a member 4 having a shoulder 5 engaging the disc 1 and a screw-threaded portion 6 engaging a sleeve 7 rotatable thereon to press a ballrace 8 against the margins of the plate 2 and so vary the pressure on the fluid, such as oil, within the space 9.
