Abstract

A process for varnishing vertical or inclined surfaces is characterized by the use of varnishes which contain unsaturated higher molecular polyesters mixed with low molecular polymerizable unsaturated esters together with unsaturated polymerizable compounds and with solid finely divided voluminous additives in such quantity that the varnish can be applied to vertical surfaces or inclined surfaces in a single coat, the amount of additive varying from about 0.1-10 per cent by weight. Specified polyesters are the reaction products of ethylene or propylene glycol or diethylene glycol and maleic acid anhydride, specified unsaturated esters are the diallyl esters phthalic, succinic, adipic, sebacic and maleic acids, specified polymerizable compounds are styrene, vinyl ether, cyclopentadiene, cyclohexene, and methacrylic acid methyl esters, while specified solids are silicic acid, kieselguhr, micro-asbestos, micro-talcum, finely divided plastics, and artificial silk powder. Catalysts such as benzoyl or dibutyl peroxides, t-butyl perbenzoate, t-butyl hydroperoxide and 1-hydroxy-cyclohexyl-1-hydroxyperoxide or mixtures thereof together with plasticizers, e.g. dibutyl phthalate or driers, e.g. cobalt naphthenate may also be present.
