Abstract

Castable resin compositions contain (1) an unsaturated alkyd containing a polycondensation product of a dibasic acid and a dihydric alcohol, said dibasic acid and/or dihydric alcohol having copolymerizable double bonds, and a mixture of copolymerizable monomers containing (II) a -methyl styrene and (III) styrene and/or nuclear substituted styrene such as vinyl toluene and vinyl xylene. The weight ratio of (I) to the total of (II) and (III) lies between the limits 90 : 10 and 40 : 60, the weight ratio of (II) to (III) lies within the limits 5 : 95 and 60 : 40, and the total amount of (II) and (III) forms at least 75% of the polymerizable monomers present. The alkyds may be formed from maleic and/or fumaric acid and ethylene, propylene and diethylene glycols and are modified if desired with phthalic, adipic or benzoic, salicylic and acetic acids and octyl and butyl alcohols. Dicyclohexyl peroxide and cobalt naphthenate, and benzoyl peroxide and dimethyl aniline may be used as catalyst with hydroquinone as inhibitor.
