Abstract

A multiple layer article having an intermediate film of a metal oxide is formed by depositing on a support, by thermal evaporation or sputtering, a film of Mg, Sn, Pb, Fe or Ti, depositing directly upon such film a coating of a material difficult to oxidize and of such thickness as to be pervious to the passage of oxygen at high temperature and heating the article in an oxidizing atmosphere at high temperature so as substantially completely to oxidize the intermediate film throughout its depth without oxidizing the outer coating. The support may be of glass, porcelain, tile, ceramic, earthenware, aluminium silicate, calcium silicate, mica, silica or metal and the outer coating may be of Pt, Pd, Rh, Ir, Ag, Au, MgF2, CaF2, cryolite, silica, zircon, ZrO2 or ZnO. Additional layers may be formed e.g. an inner and outer oxidisable film with an intermediate non-oxidizable one such as Pb-Au-Pb; or first and third oxidizable layers with a second layer of Au and an outer layer of SiO2; alternatively two adjacent oxidizable films may be oxidized through a non-oxidizable one. In a modification, to give a decorative effect, part of the surface is masked during the oxidation step.
