Abstract

757,833. Grinding machines. MARTIN & CIE. May 25, 1954 [Aug. 17, 1953], No. 15449/54. Class 60 A grinding machine comprises a stationary frame A, Fig. 2, a longitudinallymovable carriage B having a support for the work, and a transversely-moveable carriage C, a carrier I for the grinding wheel spindle G, which is mounted so as to pivot round a horizontal axis Y-Y<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5, and a motor H driving the spindle being carried by a slide 4 which is vertically movable inside an upright 1 mounted on the carriage C and adapted to be turned about a vertical axis X-X<SP>1</SP>. The carriage B may be moved hydraulically or by rack and pinion gear operated by handwheels D-D while the carriage C is moved by a screw 24, Fig. 6, and a nut 25 which is in splined engagement with the underside of the carriage C. The clearances in this mechanism are taken up by fluid pressure admitted through a port 29 to an annular space between a piston 21 connected to the carriage C and a sleeve 23. A bore through the piston 21, however, allows pressure fluid to flow to the space at the left-hand side of the piston 21 to cause a rapid hydraulic traverse 237 of the carriage C to the right when required. The screw 24 may be rotated directly by a handwheel F or through gearing by a second handwheel (not shown). Fig. 5 shows the mechanism for adjusting the slide 4 in the upright 1. This comprises a screw 5 which is subjected to fluid pressure from a pipe 21 to support the weight of the slide assembly and in threaded engagement with one of a pair of bevel gears 6, 9 rotated directly by a handweel 13 or through gears by a handwheel 14. For sharpening helically-toothed cutters, a headstock K, Fig. 9. mounted on the carriage B is provided and an angular oscillation imparted to the spindle 39 by the reciprocation of the carriage by means of a transversely-moveable bar 49, Fig. 11, which engages an angularly-adjustable bar 45 fixed to the frame A. The bar 45 is connected by a pair of steel tapes 52, 55 to a pulley 51 which drives the spindle through a worm gear 58, 66, a spring- loaded catch 63 and a dividing head 64. The worm 58 may be locked to'the tailstock body by a spring-loaded plunger 60 and the spindle 39 gradually adjusted by the worm 66 when setting up for the first cut, the workpiece being rotated for subsequent cuts by the dividing head 64. The work support may be angularly adjustable on the carriage B.
