757,554. Ammonium nitrate explosives. 'IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 31. 1954 [April 26, 1954], No 11943/54. Class 9(2) In explosive compositions, free from liquid nitric esters, comprising a major proportion of ammonium nitrate and a minor proportion of a normally solid fusible self-explosive sensitizer, e.g. trinitrotoluol, tetryl, or a mixture of trinitrobenzene and trinitrotoluol, the ammonium nitrate is'of particle size such that substantially all of it passes 120 B.S.S. mesh (124Á), at least 85 per cent passes 170 B.S.S. mesh (89Á), and at least 65 per cent passes 240 B.S.S. mesh (66Á), and the particles have a solidified coating of the sensitizer. The composition may be prepared by mixing up to 95 per cent ammonium nitrate, which may have been treated with an anti-setting agent, and the sensitizer at above the melting point of the sensitzer, e.g. 85‹C. for trinitrotoluol, and cooling the mixture preferably with stirring to room temperature. The composition may include at least one flame-suppressing agent, e.g. sodium chloride, sodium sulphate, calcium sulphate, or china clay, and carbonaceous material, e.g. woodmeal or bagasse.
