Abstract

Water - soluble condensation products of methylol compounds of dicyandiamide and/or dicyandiamidine with a polyhydric alcohol are prepared in an acidic medium at below 50 DEG C. In examples, dicyandiamide and formaldehyde are heated together in water, cooled, and resorcinol, phloroglucinol, pyrocatechol, or its alkyl homologues added, followed by glacial acetic acid or ammonium chloride. The solutions may be used directly or concentrated and evaporated to form solid tanning agents for hides and skins.
