Abstract

755,289. Floor cleaning machines. LIGGENSTORFER, A. June 29, 1954 [June 29, 1953; Dec. 21, 1953; May 22, 1954], No. 18949/54. Class 138(1) Relates to a floor cleaning machine in which the drive to the floor treating components is effected through a planetary gear from a driving wheel of a motor. The invention is characterized in that driven wheels of the gear are drivingly connected to carrier discs, on which the components are detachably mounted, by way of resilient members which permit relative angular and vertical movements between each driven wheel and carrier disc. As shown in Fig. 2, the motor shaft 1 terminates in the driving wheel 2 carrying a friction sleeve 3. The sleeve 3 engages friction sleeves 7 on three wheels 6 mounted for rotation in bearings 9 in the arms of the star-shaped carrier member 10, which is freely rotatable about the shaft 1. The sleeves 7 also engage a friction sleeve 4 on the internal wall surface of the machine casing 5. As the shaft 1 rotates the, wheels 6 will perform a planetary motion about the shaft 1 in addition to rotating about their own axes 8. Each wheel 6 carries a central pin 12 which engages in a pivot bearing 13 in a carrier disc 11. The discs 11 are each provided with recesses 17 and a projection 19 grooved at 18, to facilitate the detachable mounting of the floor treating members which may have brushes, steel shavings or the like. The disc 11 is resiliently connected to the wheel 6 by a pair of crossed flexible cables 15 passing one on each side of the pin 12. Each cable is connected to the wheel and disc and adjacent ends of the cables are interconnected by springs 16 as described with reference to Fig. 3 (not shown). Four vertical springs 14 are also disposed between the wheel and disc. This arrangement of springs allows of relative vertical and angular movement between the wheel and disc. In another embodiment the disc 11 may be resiliently mounted on the wheel 6 by a single coil spring concentric with the pin 12, one end of the spring being secured to the wheel and the other secured to the disc. Alternatively two concentric springs arranged so as to oppose each other may be utilized. The wheels 6 may be carried in bearings floating in bifurcated ends of the arms of the carrier 10, instead of as shown. Instead of friction sleeves, the wheels 2 and 6 may have interengaging teeth and the internal wall of the casing 5 would then be provided with a metal ring having internal teeth, to engage the teeth of the wheels 6. Three recesses 20 are provided in the carrier 10 so that a single large brush may be fitted thereto which brush would then be rotated slowly.
