Class 145 [Also in Group VIII] Thick-walled half-tubes are cut from blocks of mineral wool by feeding the block towards and past at least two saws or knives which are in the form of continuously-rotated cylindrical blades 12 or arcuately-reciprocated bent blades 20, the axes of the blades lying along a surface of the block and the blades being supported so that they have free arcs corresponding to the desired length of semicircular cut; the radial distance apart of the blades corresponds to the required thickness of the half-tubes and two machines having blades of different radii may be placed directly behind one another or two or more concentric blades may be provided to cut one or more half-tubes in a single operation. As shown in Fig. 2, the cylindrical blade 12 is held against a motordriven rubber-covered roller 5 by a roller 7 on an arm 8 pivoted at 11 and is additionally supported radially and axially by flanged rollers 18 carriel by bars 16 which are angularly and axially adjustable in blocks 13. The blade 12 may alternatively have holes for engagement with a toothed driving roller. As shown in Fig. 3, the bent blade 20 is attached to an arcuate slide 22 which is supported by members 23 and has a pin 24 engaging a slot in a reciprocating rod 25; alternatively, a radial slot on a lug on the slide 22 may be engaged by a crank pin on a rotating shaft. Fig. 8 shows four concentric blades 31, 32, 33 and 34 mounted on a shaft 36 having a driving crank 37, the inner blade 34 being formed on a sleeve 39 provided with a deflector 41 for leading away the waste core cut by the blade 34.
