Abstract

753,996. Extruding. HYDROPRESS, Inc. Feb. 23, 1954 [March 9, 1953], No. 5278/54. Class 83 (4). A billet extrusion press has a container 10 movable towards and away from the die 15 by pistons 36 to facilitate removal of the discard or for allowing the die to be inspected or lubricated, and additional power-operated means 50 are provided for engaging the container and pressing it into sealing relationship with the die. A slidable crosshead 50, which has an annular face 51 for engaging the container, is connected to pistons 54 operating in cylinders 55 mounted on a main crosshead 27 connected to the main piston 25 which operates the press ram 28. During the approach stroke of the ram, the crosshead 27 moves the crosshead 50 against the container and the fluid pressure in the cylinders 55 urges the container into sealing contact with the die 15 which is mounted in a die holder 16. As the piston 25 continues its stroke the cylinders 55 move over the pistons 54 and expel fluid therefrom. The forward stroke of the crosshead 50 relative to the crosshead 27 is limited by the rods 70 which at their rear ends carry adjustable nuts, Fig. 4 (not shown). The ram is returned by admitting pressure fluid to return cylinders 30 and the crosshead 50 is also retracted during this movement by the rods 70 or, if the pistons 54 are double-acting, by admitting fluid to the cylinders 55.
