Abstract

753,930. Gas turbine plant. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE AKT.-GES. May 28, 1954 [May 29, 1953], No. 15947/54. Class 110(3) [Also in Groups XII and XIII] In a gas turbine plant, compressed air flows continuously through a regenerator to the turbine or turbines, the regenerator being intermittently charged by the combustion of fuel introduced into the air. In the gas turbine plant shown, air is supplie by a compressor 1 by way of a preheater 2 to a combustion chamber 3, from which the working fluid passes by way of a regenerator 4 and a further combustion chamber 5 to a turbine 6. Fuel from a pump 12 is admitted to the combustion chambers 3 and 5 through valves 9 and 11 respectively, the valves being controlled by a speed governor 10. Valve 11 is also controlled by a temperature-responsive element (not shown) at 8. The admission of fuel takes place intermittently and causes the regenerator 4 to be heated up. When the fuel supply is cut off, the regenerator 4 gives up heat to the air flowing through it. A mixing chamber may be provided at the outlet side of the regenerator 4, for mixing cold air with the hot gas, the admission of the cold air being controlled automatically in the same way as the fuel supply to the combustion chamber 5. Combustion chamber 3 may be separate from the regenerator 4 instead .of being combined with it. The regenerator may be arranged to remove impurities from the gas, in which case two regenerators may be provided, one being cleaned while the other is in operation. Regulation may be effected by connecting and disconnecting part of the regenerator or by the use of bleeding points in the regenerator. The temperature at the regenerator outlet may be rendered uniform by dividing the regenerator into zones of different length, cross-section or filling materials: Alternatively, the regenerator may be heated intermittently in phasedisplaced fashion by a number of parallelconnected combustion chambers which are operated with staggered periods, temperature equalization being effected, it may be by the provision of a mesh of good thermal conductivity ahead of the turbine.
