Abstract

634,856. Generating combustion products under pressure. AKT.-GES. FUR TECHNISCHE STUDIEN. June 4, 1947, No. 14774. Convention date, June 8, 1946. [Class 51 (i)] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXVII] In a charging set, for supplying combustion air under pressure to the combustion chamber or chambers of a hot air or gas power plant, in which the combustion air is delivered by a compressor which draws its supply from the atmosphere and which is driven by a turbine which is itself driven by the waste gases from the combustion chamber or chambers to which the air is supplied and in which a heat exchanger is provided for heating the combustion air which is on its way from the compressor to the combustion chamber or chambers and for consequently cooling the waste combustion gases which are on their way from the combustion chamber or chambers to the turbine, a byepass for the waste gases is arranged across the heat exchanger and means are provided for varying the relative flow of the waste gases through the heat exchanger and byepass. The byepass enables the amount of energy given up by the waste gas turbine to be adapted to the amount of energy consumed by the compressor. As shown charging air is supplied to a combustion chamber 9 by a compressor 1 through pipes 2, 5, 8 and heatexchangers 3, 6. The compressor is driven by a turbine 14 operated by exhaust gases from the combustion chamber. Before passing to the turbine the exhaust gases heat the air supplied by the compressor in the heat-exchanger 6 and after leaving the turbine pass through the heat-exchanger 3. The air from the compressor is pre-heated in the heatexchanger 3 before it reaches the heat-exchanger 6. The heat-exchanger 6 has a byepass pipe 18 for compressed air and a bypass pipe 16 for exhaust gases these byepasses being controlled respectively by valves 19, 17. In the combustion chamber 10 piping 11 is arranged in which a working medium of a power plant is heated. When the byepass 16 is open the pressure at the inlet to the turbine is higher than when the byepass is closed. The temperature of the exhaust gases flowing to the turbine can be varied by altering the quantity of air passing through the heat exchanger by means of the valve 19.
