A hoist comprises a hoist body 1 formed to provide an inner housing for the drive-shaft 3 of motor 10 and gearing 4, and an outer housing for the cable drum, the outer housing forming a flange 7 forming part of a cage for the roller bearings 8 on which the drum rotates. Alternatively, the motor, including stator, is formed separate from the hoist body.
